Stop! Read This Before Trying a New Product

Acne_Scarring

We know how exciting it can be when you finally add that coveted product to your skincare collection; the little jar or bottle sitting perfectly on your vanity. But, with so many brands and formulations on the market, adding something new to your regime can get intimidating. And as hard as we try, the cosmos cannot always predict how our skin may respond to it (especially for those who have sensitive skin). Don't let this uncertainty stop you from making your next beauty splurge. Whether you have a goodie (or two) sitting in your cart or you're looking to treat a sudden flare-up, there are a few things you should consider before jumping the gun and incorporating a new product into your routine.

Tip #1: Know Your Skin Type

To help determine your skin type, take our skin analysis quiz online or reach out to one of our skincare experts by phone or by email at info@miracle10.com. Once you've figured that out, assess your complexion to determine your skincare goals. For example, you might want to treat chronic dehydration or cystic acne breakouts. You might even want to address fine lines and hyperpigmentation. Whatever your goals are, knowing your skin type first is critical to avoid any unexpected flare-ups and create a thorough routine that's best suited for you. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to skincare!

Tip #2: Get Familiar With The Ingredient List

We get it. Reading the back of a skincare product can often look like it's been written in a foreign language. That being said, doing a bit of research to understand what ingredients work best for your skin type is important - Especially right before you smear it all over your face! For example, those of you with delicate skin may find that using AHA Gel can cause irritation. Instead, we recommend AHA Cream for gentle exfoliation without the flare-up. Dealing with breakouts? Veil to the rescue. So, read the back of your products and google the ingredients, if you must! We like to use this tool called https://incidecoder.com/ to help us understand whether an ingredient list is best suited for our needs.

Tip #3 - Patch Test, Patch Test, Patch Test

It's very important to perform a patch test, preferably along the jawline, for compatibility prior to using a product. Usually, those with flare-up tendencies will spot irritation within the hour but if you have really sensitive skin, give it a day or two of testing before full application. Lastly, more doesn't always mean better. If the directions advise for a pea-sized amount of product, that's usually for a reason! For example, when applying Cleanser, you really only need 1-2 pumps or about a dimed-sized amount. And for most active formulations like AHA Cream or Retinol, a pea-sized amount is more than enough to achieve desired results. A nickel-sized portion is enough moisturizer for your entire face!

Tip #4 - Take Your Time

If you're new to active ingredients, especially retinoids, always start low (percentage) and go slow. You can benefit from adding an active into your skincare routine with ingredients like retinoids, niacinamide, AHAs and so much more. They can help tackle hyperpigmentation, acne scarring - even fine lines. But, the key thing to remember is that these are powerful ingredients that should often be applied with caution. Lower percentages are a smart way to go for first-timers. We'd also highly recommend once a week application until you are certain your complexion can tolerate the formulations. You can read all about active ingredients and our top tips, here. And remember, consistency is the secret to skincare. Take your time and stick with it. No, you don't need an 8-step routine to achieve that "glow." The best routine is the one you'll follow!
